ποΈ Vishalakshi Temple
The Wide-Eyed Mother of Kashi
π The Divine Eye
Located at Mir Ghat, just a few minutes’ walk from the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the Vishalakshi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati in her form as the “Wide-Eyed One.” It is the Stana Peetha (or where the earrings fell in some traditions), making it one of the 51 Shakti Peethas where the energy of the Divine Mother is most potent.
π Mythology & Power
The temple’s history is deeply intertwined with the story of Goddess Sati. When her body was dismembered by Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra to calm Lord Shiva’s grief, her earrings (Manikundala) or eyes are said to have fallen here.
ποΈ Unique Architecture
The temple is a rare gem of Dravidian Architecture in the middle of North Indian Varanasi:
- The Gopuram: A towering, intricately carved entrance typical of Tamil Nadu temples.
- Two Idols: The sanctum houses two images of the Goddessβa smaller, older stone idol (Adi Vishalakshi) and a larger, newer one used for daily worship.
- Shri Yantra: A sacred geometric representation of the Goddess, installed by Adi Shankaracharya, is housed within the temple.
