The Shri Ambabai (Mahalakshmi) Temple in Kolhapur is one of the most important of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas. Built in the 7th century, it is a spiritual powerhouse known as Dakshin Kashi. The temple is unique because the deity faces West, and the entire structure is engineered so that the sun’s rays reach the idol during specific times of the year.

Constructed in the Hemadpanti style, the temple features the following unique elements:

  • The Murti: Carved from precious stone, the 3-foot-tall idol is self-manifested (Swayambhu). It holds a shield, a mace, and a bowl.
  • Matulinga: A stone linga is situated on the head of the Goddess, representing the union of Shiva and Shakti.
  • Five Portals: The temple has five main entrances (Dwars), with the Mahadwar being the most prominent.
