Foundation and Vision
The foundation of Sri Harmandir Sahib was laid in 1589 CE by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru. The site itself was sanctified earlier when Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth Guru, excavated the holy water tank known as the Amrit Sarovar, from which the city of Amritsar derives its name.
Unlike many religious structures built on elevated ground, the Golden Temple was deliberately built at a lower level. Devotees must walk down steps to enter the sanctum, symbolising humility and the need to shed ego before approaching the divine.
