🕉️ Kanyakumari Amman
The Eternal Virgin Goddess of the Three Seas
📜 The Shakti Peetha Identity
Kanyakumari is one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas. According to the ancient Puranas, it is believed that Sati’s Spine (Back) fell at this southernmost tip of India. The spiritual energy here is focused on the spine, representing the pillar of strength and the channel of Kundalini energy.
👹 The Banasura Episode
The demon king Banasura obtained a boon that he could only be killed by a virgin girl. Believing himself immortal, he terrorized the worlds. To destroy him, the Divine Mother Adi Parashakti took birth as a young girl (Kumari) and devoted her life to penance, maintaining her virginity to preserve the power required to slay the demon.
💍 The Legend of the Unfinished Wedding
Goddess Kumari sought to marry Lord Shiva. However, the Devas realized that if the marriage was consummated, the Goddess would no longer be a virgin, making Banasura invincible.
Soon after, the Goddess slew Banasura in a fierce battle, restoring peace to the universe while remaining the “Nitya Kanya” (Eternal Virgin).
✨ Sacred Symbols
The Diamond Nose Ring: The idol’s nose ring is so brilliant that sailors once mistook its glow for a lighthouse, leading to shipwrecks. Consequently, the eastern door of the temple remains closed.
