The **Danta Kali Temple** is a major Shakti Peetha located on the Bijaypur Hill in Dharan, Sunsari district of Nepal. As a vital spiritual anchor for Eastern Nepal, it marks the spot where the teeth of Goddess Sati fell. The temple is famous for its panoramic views of the Terai plains and the unique “Danta” (tooth) shaped stone worshipped in the sanctum.

📜 The Mythology of the Tooth

The Sacred Relic

Inside the temple, the object of worship is not a typical statue, but a silver-plated rock that naturally resembles a row of human teeth. It is believed that **nine teeth** of Goddess Sati fell here. Of these, five are considered highly significant as they represent the five fundamental elements (Panch Bhoota).

Scriptural Context

The temple is prominently mentioned in the *Swasthani Brata Katha*. While it is dedicated to Kali, the fierce form of the Divine Mother, the temple environment on the hills of Bijaypur is tranquil and meditative.

🏛️ Architectural Style and Environment

The temple features a Gumba (Dome) Style architecture, which is a rare and beautiful variation of the traditional pagoda. It was extensively renovated in 1978.

1. The Sanctum: The tooth-shaped rock is kept inside a silver enclosure and is perpetually draped in red silk and flowers.

2. The Hilltop Setting: Situated at an altitude of about 1,600 feet, the temple provides a cool breeze and a clear view of Dharan city below.

3. Sacred Circuit: Danta Kali is part of a “Trident” of temples on Bijaypur hill, alongside **Budha Subba** (the ancestor shrine) and **Pindeshwar Baba** (dedicated to Shiva).

✨ Unique Traditions and Festivals

Dashain and Maha Ashtami

During the **Dashain** festival, thousands of pilgrims flock to the temple. On **Maha Ashtami**, animal sacrifices (roosters and goats) are performed as part of the ancient Shakti traditions to honor the Goddess’s victory over evil.

Saturdays are considered the most auspicious day for regular weekly visits, where devotees offer coconuts and red hibiscus flowers to the Mother.
