The Legend: The Infinite Column of Fire

The temple is steeped in the ancient legend of a contest between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to establish superiority. Lord Shiva appeared as a Jyotirlingaβ€”an infinite column of fire. Brahma took the form of a swan to find the top, while Vishnu became a boar to find the base. Both failed to find the ends of the infinite light, humbling their egos. Shiva then manifested as the Arunachala Hill, making this site the “center of the universe” for his devotees.

Agni Lingam: As one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalams, the presiding deity here represents Fire. It is believed that Shiva resides here in his most radiant and powerful form to destroy the darkness of ignorance.

Architecture: The Rajagopuram

Spanning over 25 acres, this is one of the largest temple complexes in India. The architecture is a breathtaking display of Chola and Vijayanagara styles.

  • πŸ›•
Rajagopuram: The eastern tower stands at a staggering 217 feet with 11 tiers, making it one of the tallest in Asia. It was commissioned by King Krishnadevaraya.
  • πŸ›•
The Thousand-Pillar Hall: An architectural masterpiece where each pillar is carved with intricate celestial figures and warriors on horseback.
  • πŸ›•
Shivaganga Tank: The massive sacred water tank located within the third precinct, reflecting the giant gopurams in its still waters.

Girivalam: Walking with the Divine

At Tiruvannamalai, the hill itself is worshipped as the Lingam. Girivalam is the practice of circumambulating the 14-km path around the base of the Arunachala Hill.

On every Pournami (Full Moon), hundreds of thousands of devotees walk this path barefoot. Along the way, there are Eight Lingams (Ashta Lingams) facing different directions, each associated with a zodiac sign and specific blessings.

The temple priests perform pujas (rituals) six times on a daily basis. These include the Kaalaippani at 5:30 a.m., Kaalai Vazhipaadu at 8:00 a.m., Nadunchama Vazhipaadu at 10:00 a.m., Maalaipani at 6:00 p.m., Irandaam Kaalai Pani at 8:00 p.m. and Iravuppani at 10:00 p.m.[49] Each ritual comprises four steps: Thirumanchanam (sacred bath), Alangaaram (decoration), Neivedhiyam (food offering) and Theepaarathanai (waving of lamps) for both Annamalaiyar and Unnamulai Amman. The worship is held amidst music with nagaswaram (pipe instrument) and tavil (percussion instrument), religious instructions in the Vedas read by priests and prostration by worshippers in front of the temple mast.

3Karthigai Deepam Festival

The most spectacular event is the Karthigai Deepam festival. A massive cauldron filled with tons of ghee and camphor is lit at the very peak of the Arunachala Hill at sunset. The flame is visible for miles and symbolizes the victory of light over ego. This is the moment when the “Fire Element” of the temple is most vibrantly felt.

This festival is conducted in the Tamil month of Kartikai. (November – December).
