Char Dham

Char Dham – The Four Sacred Dhams of Hinduism

The Char Dham refers to the four most sacred pilgrimage sites of Hinduism,
established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE.
These four temples are located in the four cardinal directions of India and
represent the spiritual unity of the country.

Pilgrimage to the Char Dham is traditionally associated with the pursuit of
moksha (liberation) and spiritual fulfillment.

The Four Char Dhams

Badrinath Dham – Uttarakhand (North)

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Badrinath is located in the Himalayas along the banks
of the Alaknanda River. It is one of the most important Vaishnavite shrines and
also forms part of the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage.

Dwarkadhish Temple – Dwarka, Gujarat (West)

Dwarka is associated with Lord Krishna and is believed to be his ancient kingdom.
The Dwarkadhish Temple is a major Vaishnava pilgrimage site and holds great
significance in Krishna traditions.

Jagannath Temple – Puri, Odisha (East)

Dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu, this temple is famous for
the annual Rath Yatra. Puri is considered one of the holiest pilgrimage
cities in India.

Ramanathaswamy Temple – Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu (South)

Associated with Lord Shiva, this temple is closely linked to the Ramayana.
It is believed that Lord Rama worshipped Shiva here before crossing to Lanka.
Rameshwaram is also one of the 12 Jyotirlingas.

Spiritual Significance of the Char Dham

The Char Dham pilgrimage symbolizes spiritual completeness by covering the entire
geographical span of India. Pilgrims traditionally undertake the journey in a
clockwise direction, beginning from the north.

Visiting all four Dhams is believed to cleanse past karma and guide devotees
toward liberation.

Char Dham and Chota Char Dham – Not the Same

The Char Dham described here is different from the
Chota Char Dham, which is a regional Himalayan pilgrimage circuit consisting of:

  • Yamunotri
  • Gangotri
  • Kedarnath
  • Badrinath

Both circuits are spiritually significant but represent different traditions
and purposes.
